Yoga Sutra-2

The word Yoga means union. It is the process of uniting the individual with the universal soul.
So here Patanjali explains te complete meaning of Yoga in 2nd sutra of the Samadhi Pada-

Yogas chitta vrtti- nirodhah
Yoga is restraining the activities of the mind.
Yogah: yoga; chitta: consciousness; vrtti: activities, modifications; nirodhah: stopping, restrain

The sutra is composition of four words: yoga, chitta, vrtti & nirodhah. Chitta is derived from the basic idea of chit, which means, to see, to understand, to be aware. So Chitta means individual
consciousness, which includes the conscious state, subconscious state & also unconscious state of the mind. It is, in a sense, the ground floor of the mind.
In Vedanta philosophy, it is referred to as antahkarna, which means inner instrument. The antahkarna contains four main elements.
The Manas, mind, engages in thinking, doubting & willing.
The buddhi, intellect, & it performs the functions of discriminating & making decisions.
The ahamkara, ego, which is self-arrogating & sees itself as separate from the source.
Finally, there is subconscious, which serves as a storehouse of past experiences & memory, this is also called the chitta.

So we can see, the word chitta has several meanings, Patanjali uses chitta in a broader sense, as the vary foundation that makes up one,s mental appratus. The chitta may manifest in one of five forms at any given time. They are:
1.Kshipta, scattering, form is activity & tends to be experienced as pleasure & pain.
2.Mudha,darkening, dullness, the tendecy is to see & cause suffering,& to negate happiness.
3.Vikshipta, gathering, centering, the form functions when the mind struggles to draw itself to its center. Here there is the conscious effort to gather & focus them.
4.Ekagara, one pointed, concentrated; it is one pointed state, which finally leads to the ultimate state-
5.Nirudha, absolute suspension of activity.

Here again, chitta is like a lake on which rise & fall waves, which are comaparable to the thoughts. These thought waves are called vrittis.

A vritti is a mental modification, it is the difference between action & the absence of action in the mind. In the average person there are thousands of vrttis arising each minute in the mind.

Nirodhah is from the basic word rodha, which means an act of blocking
To come to the final point- what is Yoga? The sutra replies that yoga is the blocking of the patterns arising in all the dimensions of consciousness.
Hari om!
